arbor {before & possibly after}
by John Sibley Williams
vines tether a home to both
earth & sky / as a bullet
burrows cleanly / from
entrance to exit / as light
caught in a shovel’s broad
empty palm / means nothing
has yet been planted or dis-
interred / as the margins / all
marked up in fences be it /
barb or chain or cedar or
a few mis- / placed words /
biopsy a town / malignancy
& root rot / once brightly
colored bodies wilt within
a single dry season / how as a
child before i knew anything
about love i’d misname this
shady corner of fading green
abhor or ardor / sometimes
i still ask the world what it
takes to angle my forgiving
as i would a roof / careful
calculations that may one day
/ loosen the christmas lights
into funeral candles / all this
guttered rain into flood / both
earth & sky / enter & exit /
raging grandfather & gender-
less child / tethered to the
margins a few unspoken
syllables that might just mean
/ the same as —
